Job Title: Mid-Level Network Engineer
Employer: Alliant Technologies - Cisco Gold Partner
Job Location: New York City
Required: Must have either CCNP, CCDP or CCSP.

Job description:
Assists with the design, development, and support of networking environments. Responsible for complex testing and analysis of all network facilities, including routers, switches, software, communications equipment, lines, modems, and terminals. Monitors and controls the performance and status of the network resources. Utilizes software and hardware tools, identifies and diagnoses problems and factors affecting network performance. Participates in pre and post-sales meetings with clients determining project scope and technical options and requirements. Leads small teams of Engineers on projects and provides technical leadership to more junior engineers. Participates in technical interviews of employment candidates.
Technical responsibilities:
  • Confer with clients’ IT staff and apply system analysis techniques and procedures to determine hardware, software, or systems functional specifications.
  • Advise clients on alternate methods of solving needs or problems or recommends specific solutions. Solutions may require business modeling or analysis and may include cost structures and justification processes.
  • Act as technical lead, directing the plans and activities of others assigned to the project. Provide technical leadership and coaching to other Network Engineers.
  • Create standards and conduct troubleshooting analysis to ascertain problems.
  • Conduct all phases of information technology projects such as new technology research, and state-of-the-art network implementation. Configure and deploy networking equipment including infrastructure hardware and software, network management tools, routers, switches, hubs, etc.
  • Assist in business development efforts by performing needs assessment and recognizing opportunities. Write proposals which may include staffing and equipment requirements, planning, and cost analysis.
  • Produce quality technical documentation for complex solutions.
  • Able to manage lower level engineers on projects.
  • Manage status meetings with clients.
  • Work on internal projects as directed by Resource or Practice management.
  • Provide network training for Alliant sales force.
  • Conduct research and lab testing of new products at the direction of Resource or Practice Management.
Sales and marketing responsibilities:
  • All network engineer duties.
  • Develop product sheets.
  • Case study documentation.
  • Industry organization involvement.
Project management responsibility:
Must be capable of leading short term (less than 2 weeks) small (1-3 engineers) projects involving Alliant personnel.
Education:
Technical school degree or bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.
Work experience:
At least 6 years direct, progressive hands-on networking experience, of which at least 2 years must be in a consulting environment. Ability to learn new technologies quickly and integrate them into a distributed environment. Ability to work in a global team environment. Excellent organizational skills.
Technical skills:
  1. Be able to discuss 8 of the 10 networking focus areas and implement in small environments.
  2. Must be capable of implementing technology related to 2 of the 10 networking focus areas in a large scale environment.
Business skills:
Develop all customer service skills. Develop all level I writing skills. Develop all level I skills in one of the following areas:
Project management
Presentation skills
Sales
Develop at least one level II skill in:
Project management
Presentation skills
Sales
Writing
Communication:
Excellent verbal and written skills. Must be able to present the companies’ products and services to clients in pre-sales meetings. Must be comfortable discussing complex technical subjects with client’s IT staff, senior management and executives.
Ongoing training requirements:
All levels are required to complete at least 1 Cisco, RSA or other approved IT industry certification per year. This can include vendor-specific certifications or certifications required to meet Alliant’s commitments to its partners. It may also include vendor-independent certifications. All certifications must be approved by the Practice or Resource Manager. All certifications must be maintained or upgraded. Exceptions can only be approved by the Practice or Resource Manager.
